There’s nothing like a lush, overflowing urn to welcome you (and your guests) home. To show you how easy it can be, we teamed up with June Spanier of June of All Trades to create a stunning seasonal arrangement using the TierraVerde™ Crescendo Urn.
The secret? The Thriller–Filler–Spiller method — a tried-and-true planting technique that balances height, texture, and color for a full, professional look that only gets better as the season goes on.
What You’ll Need
-
1 Crescendo Urn (with built-in water reservoir)
-
1 Thriller plant (we used a Canna Lily, Cannanova Orange Bronze)
-
5 Filler plants (2 Coleus, 2 Geraniums, 1 Diamond Frost)
-
1 Spiller plant (Lysimachia congestiflora, or trailing potato vine)
-
Outdoor potting soil
-
Watering can + water
-
Garden gloves
-
Trowel (optional)
Step 1: Start with the Right Container
We’re planting in the Crescendo Urn, made from recycled rubber. It’s lightweight, unbreakable, and designed with a built-in water reservoir that helps prevent root rot while keeping your plants hydrated between waterings.
💡 Tip: If using outdoors, remove the drain plug so rainwater can escape and your soil doesn’t get soggy.
Step 2: Plant Your Thriller
Every arrangement needs a star. The “thriller” is your tall, dramatic plant that draws the eye. For this project, we chose a bold Canna Lily in brilliant orange with bronze leaves.
Before planting, gently loosen the roots (we call it “tickling” them) so they can spread and settle into their new home. Place the thriller in the center of the urn and pack soil firmly around the root ball.
Step 3: Add Your Fillers
The fillers create volume and texture around your thriller. June layered them in three steps for balance and symmetry:
-
Back layer: Two Coleus on either side of the thriller (behind it), slightly shorter but still striking.
-
Middle layer: Two Geraniums at the front, one on each side, mirroring each other.
-
Front layer: A delicate Diamond Frost in the middle front, its white blooms contrasting beautifully against the bold red and orange.
Remember: tickle those roots before planting to help them thrive.
Step 4: Let It Spill
Finish with the “spiller” — a trailing plant that will cascade over the edge of the urn. We used Lysimachia (potato vine)for its vibrant green that pops against the black Crescendo Urn. As the season progresses, it will drape dramatically down the sides for that overflowing, lush look.
Step 5: Soil & Water
Top up with fresh outdoor potting soil, water generously, and step back to admire your work. As the season unfolds, your arrangement will only get fuller, brighter, and more dynamic.
Why We Love This Project
The Thriller–Filler–Spiller method is foolproof, even if you’re new to container gardening. And with a TierraVerde Crescendo Urn, you get eco-friendly durability and a built-in water reservoir that takes the guesswork out of plant care. The result? A planter that looks stunning today and even better tomorrow.
Try this project at home and watch your Crescendo Urn transform into the centerpiece of your outdoor living space.
